چکیده

Graphplan has attracted considerable interest because of its extremely high performance, but the algorithm's inability to handle action representations more expressive than STRIPS is a major limitation. In particular, extending Graphplan to handle conditional e ects is a surprisingly subtle enterprise. In this paper, we describe the space of possible alternatives, and then concentrate on one particular approach we call factored expansion. Factored expansion splits an action with conditional e ects into several new actions called components, one for each conditional e ect. Because these action components are not independent, factored expansion complicates both the mutual exclusion and backward chaining phases of Graphplan. As compensation, factored expansion often produces dramatically smaller domain models than does the more obvious full-expansion into exclusive STRIPS actions. We present experimental results showing that factored expansion dominates full expansion on large problems.

Combining the Expressivity of UCPOP with the E ciency of Graphplan

There has been a great deal of recent work on new approaches to e ciently generating plans in systems such as Graphplan and SATplan. However, these systems only provide an impoverished representation language compared to other planners, such as UCPOP, ADL, or Prodigy. This makes it di cult to represent planning problems using these new planners. This paper addresses this problem by providing a ...

New Results about LCGP, a Least Committed GraphPlan

Planners from the family of Graphplan (Graphplan, IPP, STAN...) are presently considered as the most efficient ones on numerous planning domains. Their partially ordered plans can be represented as sequences of sets of simultaneous actions. Using this representation and the criterion of independence, Graphplan constrains the choice of actions in such sets. We demonstrate that this criterion can...
